Dispelling Misconceptions About Digital Printing

No matter the industry, some people struggle with letting go of the old ways in favor of the new. In the printing industry, this can lead to mounds of myths and misconceptions about digital printing. Here are some common misconceptions we’ve heard and the truth about digital printing:

Myth 1: Digital printing is only for short-run printing projects.

Sure, in the early days of digital printing, short-run prints were perfect for digital printers. Digital used to be limited in how much it could handle; notice how we said “used to be limited.” While some companies still love digital for short runs, digital printing can handle even the largest orders without compromising the quality!

Myth 2: Offset printing allows for more personalization.

Personalized marketing is huge. Being able to combine data with direct messaging means your marketing has a better chance of making an impact on consumers. Combining variable data with print projects comes from digital printing — not offset. The better quality your variable data, the better your digital print project can be tailor-made to your customers’ needs.

Myth 3: Digital takes up more space.

To those outside the printing industry, any of our printers will seem massive. Both printer types are huge and take up a lot of space. However, we’re talking about the collateral itself. If you do offset printing, for example, your business is stuck housing pocket folders or other collateral waiting to be printed. Digital printing, however, gives you more flexibility (and room) for your physical collateral. I’m sure a lot of you have old brochures and pocket folders taking up valuable office space and now you can’t use them because the marketing material is outdated.  The beauty of digital printing is being able to update your brand look and refresh your marketing message on a consistent basis.  With technology these days, you have to keep up and stay relevant.

Myth 4: Digital printing quality doesn’t match offset quality.

This is one of the most pervasive myths out there — the notion that digital quality can’t compete with offset. People assume that digital printers just use larger versions of the printers they have at home or in their offices. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! At Xerographic, we use the HP Indigo 12000 Digital Press, and the quality is the best on the market.

Myth 5: It’s more harmful to the environment.

Digital is the most eco-friendly way to print. Offset printers have about a 15% running waste. This means for every job produced on offset printers, 15% of the resources wind up in the trash. Digital can save up to 10% of paper waste alone! If you partner with a digital printer committed to the environment like Xerographic, you also get the assurance that paper options will also be environmentally friendly.

Myth 6: Digital print colors don’t match well/limited color scheme.

This last one is almost laughable. Our HP Indigo 12000 printer has Pantone Validated Certification, meaning it’s certified to successfully reproduce a breadth of gorgeous colors available for your design. Our printer covers 97% of Pantone’s nearly 1,900 unique colors. Digital print also allows our clients to experiment with white ink.

At Xerographic, we leverage high-quality digital printing services to give customers results that make them say “wow.” If you’ve fallen prey to some of these myths, it’s okay!
