Your business card can be one of the most important sales tools that you have. There are a lot of gimmicky cards out there. If you want a clear plastic option, that’s possible in some places. But, while these gimmicks get attention, are they the best option for your business?
In this post, we’ll look at the most critical factors when it comes to creating a killer business card. Here we’ll take a leaf out of the large format printing book. We realize that your card is small, but the same basic principles do apply.
Keep it Uncluttered
You don’t need to put your whole life history on the card. Think about the information people need first, like your name and contact details. Once those are in place, consider adding things that might impress them, like your qualifications.
Here is what any business card needs:
- Your name and surname – if there’s space, add the complements
- Your job title
- Your contact number – landline and cell if applicable
- Your company name and logo
You might also consider adding the address, and maybe the company’s motto. This is not essential, though. For the rest, keep it clean and neat.
Easy to Read Fonts
Another mistake that people make when designing their business cards is to try and cram in as much information as possible. The more information you have, the smaller the font size. And this makes your card harder to read.
Choose a bold, big font that is easy to read. Arial or Times New Roman are not the fanciest fonts, but they’re used in print media for a good reason. They are simple to read with clear letters.
Make sure that the Information Has a Border
You’ll want to try and keep a clear border around the information. That way, you know nothing is going to run off the card during the printing process. Our team will have a look at your design before printing to confirm this. But a border works as a design feature too.
Take a look at the card design below. What they did right was to use bold lettering and good contrasting colors. But the text reaches almost to either end of the card. They’ve included a small white border at the outer edge, but the lettering still lets them down.
Keep the Information Area Plain
Most of us are beyond the standard white card with black text. It works, but it isn’t the most exciting thing. You can now add photos, or even use a photo as a background. That’s a great idea, just make sure that the area the printer will print on is relatively clear.
Say, for example, that you want to use a scenic photo of a forest. Consider how well the text is going to show against the background. Would the trees be a distraction? These are things that you need to consider carefully.
